Throughout its history, Vietnam has experienced continuous contact with diverse global civilizations. In this context, assessing the status of the Vietnamese language amidst historical and contemporary processes of integration is crucial for navigating the tension between globalization and the preservation of national identity, a pivotal discourse for national development. This study clarifies the theoretical foundations of cross-linguistic contrast and intercultural communication and consider their relevance to the development of the Vietnamese language. By applying these frameworks to the developmental trajectory of the Vietnamese language, the paper provides preliminary insights into its position relative to national cultural identity.
