Analysis of first-year students’ anxiety about English speaking skill at Hanoi University of Industry

Abstract

The article analyzes the causes of anxiety, specific situations causing anxiety, and strategies to help first-year students at Hanoi University of Industry overcome anxiety when they speak English as a second language. According to the results obtained, the causes such as “lack of confidence”, “lack of knowledge of grammar rules” and “lack of opportunities” are the main causes of anxiety among students when they communicate in English. In this study, we also find that the communicative language teaching method has the effect of reducing students’ anxiety about English speaking skill.
