A Phonological Study of Ve – an Ethnic Minority Language in Quảng Nam province

Abstract

Ve is an ethnic minority language spoken in two communes of Dak Pre and Dak Pring in Nam Giang district, Quảng Nam province. The Ve ethnic group has a population of approximately 2.000 people(Vietnam National Population Census, 2019). In this paper, the Ve phonology is described and sketched out as a result of sensory hearing. The data include 2.000 lexical items in the Ve language which were  collected in 2020 within a linguistic research project  on  Investigating Jeh - Trieng vowels. The results have shown that the Ve language has 15 vowels among which 12 monophthongs /i  e  E  a  ă  µ  F  F(  u  o    A/, 3 diphthongs /ie  iE  uo/ which are nucleus  main syllables and presyllables and 47 initial monophthong consonants /p  p-  p^h  b  b-  m8  m  m-  f  v8  v  V8  V  t  d  t-  d-  t^h  n8  n  n-  r8  r  s  z  l8  l  l-  ÿ  §  §  c  ï  ø8  ø  ø-  j8  j  k  g  k^h  N8  N  N-  Ä  X  h/ và 24 tổ hợp phụ âm /bl  b-l  br  b-r  dr  d-r  Äl  Är  kl  kl8  kr  hd-  hl  hø  hø8  hm  hn  hN  hnr  hv  n-r  pl  pr  tl/ làm âm đầu của các từ, và 18 âm làm âm cuối các từ gồm 1 nguyên âm /µ/ và 14 phụ âm đơn /p  t  c  k  ?  m  n  ø  N  h  r  w  j  l/ và 3 tổ hợp phụ âm /jh  j?  w?/.
