The Concept and Typology of Collocations in Vietnamese

Abstract

Drawing on research on collocations in English, the article initially explores the concept and typology of collocations in Vietnamese. The findings indicate that, as in English, collocations in Vietnamese are analogous lexical units. They are a lexical unit consisting of a base (or node) element and a collocate. The base element may be a noun, verb, adjective, or another lexical category, while the collocate comprises other parts of speech. Regarding typology, collocations can be sub-divided into various categories based on different criteria, such as pattern-based classification, semantic salience, the strength of association or cohesion between constituent elements.
