Affect and Judgement in commentary documents on the petroleum issue in Tuổi trẻ and Nhân dân newspaper

Abstract

Appraisal Theory was proposed by Halliday but later by J.R. Martin and P.R.R. White inherited and developed in The Language of Evaluation - Appraisal in English (2005), which increasingly claimed its potential in discourse analysis studies, especially discourse associated with genre from the SFL school. This study applies Appraisal theory to identify and interpret the system of Affect and Judgement in the Attitude of the evaluator (author and non-author) in commentaries on petroleum issues in Tuoi tre and Nhan dan newspaper. From there, the article hightlights the similarities and differences in the way the review subjects' Affect and Judgement are expressed in the two newspapers. This study hopes to be a useful reference source for teaching and researching the evaluation language of the commentary genre, especially journalistic commentary from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics.
