The Vietnamese tonal system in the speech of the young Viet Kieu generations (aged 20 - 40) was affected by the simplification mechanism (internal factors) and the language interference phenomenon due to language contact with the Thai, Isan and Lao tonal systems (external factors).
Compared with the original Vietnamese tonal system, thanh ngang and thanh huyền are the tones without variations, while thanh hỏi, thanh ngã and thanh nặng have variations due to both internal and external factors, while thanh sắc has variations due to external factors only. Moreover, a distinctive
feature of Vietnamese tones in the speech of young Viet Kieu is the low voice quality in all 6 tones, and the gradual disappearance of glottalization due to the simplification mechanism.
