This study analyzes the current use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, evaluates their positive impacts and limitations, and proposes solutions to enhance the effectiveness of self-directed learning of Chinese among students majoring in Chinese language at Thuongmai University, Hanoi. Survey data indicate that students primarily use AI for vocabulary lookup and translation, with notable benefits such as rapid comprehension, contextual support, and immediate feedback. However, the application of AI in developing productive skills and domain-specific language remains limited, and there are emerging risks of overreliance on AI tools and diminished independent thinking. Based on these findings, the study proposes solutions to orient AI use toward competency-based development, strengthen critical thinking, and integrate technology with interactive learning activities. The results contribute to clarifying the role of AI in foreign language self-learning and provide a foundation for the effective integration of digital technologies into Chinese language education
